(1/31/2011) A recent surge of in robberies at villas occupied by foreigners in Bali may form the pretext for a series of raids planned on illegal villas organized by the Bali Police and the Bali Villa Associations (BHA).
The proposed "sweeping teams" will include police officials, representatives of the BHA, leading members of the community, traditional leaders and academics.
Killing Two Birds with a Single Stone?
The "sweeping teams" are intended to seek out illegal commercial villas for possible closure while at the same time ensuring licensed villas conform to standard policies for villa safety and security established by the Bali police. Explaining the wisdom of the new sweeping policy, the chief spokesman for the Bali police, Gde Sugianyar, said, "many of the unlicensed villas have become the target of robberies.
Licensed villas, hotel and private homes are required by law to file a report with the police every time a new foreigner commences a stay. A failure to file that report within 24 hours can potentially result in a fine of Rp. 5 million (US$555) and a prison sentence of one year for the dwelling place's owner.
According to Sugianyar, every police sector police station has a stock of the simple forms needed for registering the stay of foreign guests in hotels, villas and private homes.
