Bali by the Numbers: Arrivals Expected to Decline by 8.6% in 2009.
(1/24/2009) Bali Ended 2008 just short of the 2 million mark for foreign tourist arrivals, achieving 1,968,892. This was a record number of visitors by any standard, with 2008 topping 2007 by 18.26% (1,664,854).
Growth in Tourist Arrivals
Shown on balidiscovery.com are graphics charting yearly arrivals from 1997 through 2008. While growth in foreign tourist arrivals were interrupted by the terrorist attacks in 2002 and 2005, Bali has managed an average annual rate of growth in tourist arrivals of around 5.5% from 1997 to 2008.
Market Share
Also shown on balidiscovery.com is a pie-chart representing market share for all tourist arrivals to Bali in 2008.
• Despite Japan arrivals only increasing 0.91% in 2008, that market continues to be the largest source of inbound visitors holding an 18.02% market share, a decline from 2007 when the Japanese represented a 21.12% share.
• Australian arrivals soared in 2008, increasing year-on-year by 51.01%. As a market share the Australians are Bali's second largest source of foreign visitors with a 15.68% market share.
• South Korean visitors declined 1.41% in total arrivals in 2008, but still managed to move up one place in the rankings of market share. The South Koreans are now the third largest source of visitors with a 6.73% market share.
• Also moving up one place in terms of market prominence, the Malaysians are now the fourth largest market for inbound visitors, narrowly pushing the Taiwanese out of the #4 slot. Malaysian visitors are now a 6.59% market share of all visitors.
• The People’s Republic of China and Taiwan are virtually tied in a dead heat for 5th place. However, expect China to displace Taiwan and take firm control of either 4th or 5th place in 2009. Mainland Chinese visitors grew by an amazing 53.25% in 2008 while Taiwanese arrivals were virtually static.
• Rounding out the top ten countries in terms of foreign tourist arrivals to Bali in 2008 were, in descending order, the U.K. (4.19% market share); Germany (4.15% market share); France (3.85% market share); and the U.S.A. (3.50% market share).
The Bali Tourism Authority is estimating an 8.6% downturn in total arrivals in 2009, targeting 1.8 million foreign visitors for entire year.
