9,000 Dogs Targeted for Rabies Shots as 200 Veterinarians and Hundreds of Students Mobilized Across South Bali.
(12/20/2008) Tempo Interactive reports that a team of 200 veterinarians assisted by hundred of students from Bali's Udayana University undertook a mass vaccination of local dogs in Kuta and South Kuta commencing on Saturday, December 20, 2008. The anti-rabies vaccination teams was deployed at 72 points where they intended to treat 9,000 dogs.
According to Badung's Livestock, Fishery, and Maritime Service chief, I Made Badra, a total of 1,666 dogs comprising 18% of the estimated local canine population have been inoculated to date. The 9,000 more dogs slated for shots over the past weekend will mean that 85% of the targeted dog populations have now been treated. Following the treatment blitz, local officials will continue to monitor the condition of the treated dogs for three months.
Funding for the mass vaccination program is being provided the provincial government of Bali, the U.S. Food and Agriculture Organization and the Australian government.
