Care for a Brazil Nut

Drunken Driving Spree by Young Brazilian Tourist in Stolen Vehicles Injures 5 and Kills One in Kuta-Legian.

(9/22/2008) A 24-year-old Brazilian tourist, Guilherme Guedo, is in police custody in Bali following what is being described as a drunken escapade in which the young man stole a both motorbike and a small truck that he took on a frantic vehicular chase that saw him collide with 4 motorcycles, leave 5 people badly injured and a young woman dead.

Police believe that after a night of drinking Guedo stole a motorcycle in Kuta in the early morning hours of Thursday, September 18, 2008. Later, the man stole a small truck in front of the Hotel Kodiat and recommenced his drive through Kuta and Legian colliding with motorcycles and their drivers along the way.

After killing a Balinese woman and sending 5 others to hospital with broken bones Guedo's journey of tragic destruction ended when he collided with a street-side light post. Quick work by police delivered the young Brazilian from summary execution by angry crowds eager to dispense "street justice" to the drunken tourist.

The 26-year-old Balinese woman killed by Guedo was Wilaiti, traveling on a motorcycle to a local market to purchase food supplies for her family. Among those suffering broken bones and other severe injuries as the result of the drunken driving spree were several Balinese traveling to participate in ritual cleansing of local temples.

Almost certain to become a long-staying guest at Bali's Kerobokan prison, Guedo remains in the custody of Bali police who continue to investigate multiple charges of vehicular theft, manslaughter and public intoxication.
