Improving Indonesia Search and Rescue Skills

Australian Trainers Provide Month-Long Training to Indonesia's Emergency Responders.

(11/1/2008) A recent rash of air transportation mishaps in Indonesia has prompted the government of Australia to provide special search and rescue (SAR) training to selected Indonesian safety and security agencies.

Running for nearly an entire month from October 6 – 31, 2008, the Indonesian Transportation Assistance Package (ITSAP) provides intensive training in all aspect of emergency response to man-made or natural disaster.

Conducted in Batubulan in Bali's Gianyar region, two instructors from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (ASMA), Craig Condon and Paul Threfall, conducted training for 23 SAR team leaders drawn from emergency response teams across the nation. At the end of the course, the top 4 participants will be given a chance to join a national SAR exercise scheduled to be held soon in West Papua.

Bali's governor Made Pastika enthusiastically welcomed the SAR training program, pointing to Bali's growing popularity as a venue for major international events. The governor told Kompas that Bali needs search and rescue capabilities that are fast, dependable and able to handle the latest advanced rescue technologies.
