Bali Starred Hotels Must Undergo Classification Review Once Every Three Years.

(3/12/2011) The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) has warned hotels that fail to undergo a rigorous star classification re-certification process that they could potentially see their operations frozen.
The chairman of the Professional Certification Section for Hotels and Restaurants at the PHRI, Carla Parengkuan, said the review of star classification will be undertaken by the PHRI with certification given to hotels that meet the varying requirements, depending on the number of stars sought by the respective properties.
The requirement to undergo star classification is embodied in the basic tourism law. That law also provides sanctions for hotels that fail to perform classification reviews, including eventual closure for continued non-compliance.
According to Parengkuan, quoted in Radar Bali, the classification review also places emphasis on the competency and qualifications of management and staff, seen by the government as essential to keeping Indonesia's hotel industry competitive.
The secretary general of the Bali chapter of the PHRI, Perry Markus, said there are only 19 starred hotels in Bali who have signaled their readiness to undergo the review process at this time. Said Markus, "earlier there were 21 hotels ready for classification reviews, but two hotels withdrew from the process because they were not yet ready."
The PHRI and the government intend to jointly undertake classification reviews once every three years. "This will be done to improve the competitiveness of hotels in Bali and to improve the image of Bali tourism in the future," added Markus.
