The High and Low of Highway Construction in Bali
Jakarta Offers to Build Underpasses for Bali.
Bali News: The High and Low of Highway Construction in Bali
(8/23/2010) A NusaBali report gives some hope to those concerned that too many new flyover highways planned for Kuta's Simpang Siur intersection will ruin Bali's appearance.
A delegation from the Pubic Works Department of Bali, together with representatives from the Bali House of Representatives (DPRD-Bali), met with the National Planning Board (BAPPENAS) in Jakarta yielding a pledge of financial support for the construction of an underpass which, if materialized, would prove less damaging to Bali's desire to promulgate a more traditional appearance.
Ida Bagus Udiyana, a member of Commission III from the DPRD-Bali, told the press that national planners are supporting the idea of an underpass. Udiyana, who is a graduate of Bali's Udayana University technical faculty, dismissed as "a mere technicality" earlier claims that the high water table in the highway precluded the use of underpasses.
According to the press report, the new plan will include both a flyover and an underpass, working in combination to overcome traffic congestion.
Central government support for the roads project is put at Rp. 1 trillion (US$110 million).
